Whether you’ve invested some extra time into your skincare routine during lockdown, or you’re a savvy skincare fanatic who will stop at nothing to achieve the complexion of your dreams. No matter how much time we spend on our skin it’s a harsh reality that breakouts are bound to strike at the wrong moment, but could they mean to tell us more than they let on?

Reoccurring spots are frustrating to say the least, but when you don’t have any idea or explanation of why they are there or why they keep coming back, it can be even more infuriating.

What Is Face Mapping?

Enter the world of face mapping, an ancient Chinese practice which aims to highlight underlying problems with body organs through skin appearance by pinpointing what breakouts mean from where they are placed. From niggly pimples in the same place every month, to forehead breakouts overnight. We’ve broken down everything you need to know about face mapping in this useful guide.

Forehead

If you suffer from spots on your forehead, this could be an indication that there’s an imbalance in your digestive system and gut. If you’ve been indulging in a lot of fast food recently, it’s likely to show up in this area. Limiting a bad diet and flushing out your system with lots of water will help to clear up your digestive system, try to stick to drinking 2 litres of water a day to see a noticeable difference.

Eyebrows

Breakouts in the t-zone eyebrow area are said to be a sign of stress and the health of your liver. If you find that you're getting regular breakouts in the this area, it's worth taking more time for yourself and cutting back on alcohol intake to see if that reduces the breakouts in that particular area.

Cheeks

Breakouts on the cheek area are connected to the lungs, if your skin is quite congested here it could mean that you need to work out a bit more. There’s also a strong link to the cheek area picking up bad bacteria from phones and pillow cases as both of these can pick up all types of germs from our fingers which are easily transferred to our face. If you use your phone at regular intervals of the day or outside a lot it’s a good idea to wipe it down with an antibacterial wipe each evening and change your pillow case every 3 days.

Chin

Acne on the chin area is linked to hormone levels in the body, particularly if you get breakouts on your chin at the same time every month it’s very likely linked to your monthly cycle. Try to reduce your dairy intake if you regularly suffer from hormonal breakouts, as a high dairy intake is known to be a factor in sebum production - a contributing factor to acne.
